Course Outline

This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the common law contract of employment and labour law statutes; including the Labour Relations Act; Basic Conditions of the Employment Act;  and the Employment Equity Act. The course will specifically focus on the following issues that commonly arise in the workplace: the legal definition of ‘employee’; discipline and dismissals; unfair labour practices; unfair discrimination in employment and recruitment & selection; employment equity issues; collective bargaining; strikes and lock-outs; and dispute resolution.

Lecture times: This course is an intensive course, with 3 lectures per week for the full semester.  

DP requirements:. Coursework is compulsory. If students do not submit hand-ins or write a test they will receive a mark of 0 for that assessment (unless granted an exemption). However, such students will be able to write the exam.

Assessment: Coursework 40%; final examination 60%.
